Today is the fifth annual Colorado Gives Day! The Community First Foundation created the movement in 2010 to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Colorado, through online giving. ColoradoGives.org provides objective, up-to-date information about participating nonprofit organizations statewide and serves as a platform for charitable giving year-round. The website features nearly 1,500 nonprofits in Colorado, which makes it hard to choose which organizations to donate to! That’s why we’re spreading the word about one of our favorite local nonprofits, Overture.
Who is Overture?
Overture is a recognized leader in providing person-centered services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They offer individualized services, including residential, Day Program, and supported living. Overture’s mission is to support and respect the needs and desires of the people that they serve, based on the belief that emotional and physical health is central to living a life of experience, opportunity, participation, choice and growth.
This is the Overture’s first year participating in Colorado Gives Day, so I sat down with Chief Executive Director, Deborah Spencer and Laura Annarelli to talk about the importance of the event to their organization. The women agreed that what they are most excited about today is the light that the event sheds on the various needs in communities across the state. They are eager to educate donors about Overture’s mission and generate awareness about their growing Day Program.
Overture’s Day Program is a much-needed service and in 2014, they established a second Day Program to further meet community demand. By the end of this month, 20 individuals in Longmont and Lakewood will be participating in the program and Overture only owns one 15 passenger van. You can do the math to see that there aren’t enough seats for everyone! Therefore, the organization’s largest goal for 2015 is to purchase another van and train the additional staff required for the continued expansion of the program.
Every Dollar Helps!
It’s important to remember that every bit counts. To those of you who feel that a modest donation won’t make a difference, Deborah says, “The small donations combined add up to a lot. For just $10 a month, you can provide a day trip for an individual and those experiences enrich their life.”
