The Fourth of July is just days away and people are gearing up for the festivities. As an added bonus, it falls on a Saturday, meaning many of us get to enjoy a three-day weekend. (And there’s nothing better than a long weekend in the summertime!) The holiday that boasts backyard barbeques and awesome fireworks displays represents one of the most impactful events in our nation’s history; the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
In a nutshell, the American colonies were tired of paying taxes to the King of England, when they weren’t being represented in the British Parliament. So, they formed a committee to create a document that would make them free from the rule of Great Britain. The final version of the Declaration of Independence, which was originally drafted by Thomas Jefferson, includes the famous line, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Reading this gives me goosebumps every time. To think that these men made a point to declare “the pursuit of happiness” as one of our unalienable rights is quite amazing.
The phrase is so simple, yet holds profound meaning. We have the right to pursue things that bring us joy. And, in essence, isn’t that what being an entrepreneur is all about? Talk to any small business owner and you’ll likely discover that their journey began with the pursuit of happiness; they set out to do what they love, hoping they might make a dime along the way. When a person follows their passion and is committed to helping others, they have the power to change the world around them. So this Independence Day, let’s raise a glass to happiness and see where the pursuit of it leads us.
