Don’t you hate when you find yourself in that terribly awkward situation where a vendor accepts only cash, but your wallet contains only cards? What do you do? “Hold on a sec, let me run to the ATM”? Yeah, right. Luckily this is becoming less of a problem as businesses adjust to the modern methods of payment, but there are still a couple instances where you’re glad for the loose change in your pockets.
There really is no excuse not to accept plastic these days. You use “I can’t afford a credit card reader” when there are a selection of little card reader gizmos (Square, for example) that plug right into your smartphone. (If you don’t have a smartphone by now, it’s really time to hop off the horse and buggy and get with the program…) If you’re simply keeping to bills and change to stick it to the man, know that you’re losing a ton of valuable business. Leave your inner rebel at home for the sake of your income. People don’t carry wads of cash around anymore when a little card is so much more convenient (and society is all about convenience).
A prime example of small businesses in need of an upgrade is your local Farmers’ Market. Everyone loves going – fresh fruits and veggies while supporting local farmers? What’s not to love? The payment part, that’s what. You’re already juggling your berries and celery and potatoes and now you have to count out money too? Good luck with that.
Bottom line: get a card reader already. It’ll make your life, and your customers’ lives, a heck of a lot easier.
